Pelvic Vein Embolization/Pelvic Congestion Syndrome

By Dr. Cohen

Leaky vein valves in the pelvic veins can cause a variety of problems for both men and women.  In women the problem often causes pelvic pain (Pelvic Congestion Syndrome), genital varicose veins, or varicose veins in the legs.  In men it can cause testicular varicosities and infertility.  The most common veins that are affected are the ovarian veins in women, and the testicular veins in men.  These veins are located deep in the pelvis.

The diagnosis can usually be made using duplex ultrasound or CT scanning, and confirmed with dye injection (venography) which would typically be done during treatment.

Fortunately for patients with this condition, treatment is available.  Once the abnormal pelvic veins are identified, the treatment is to close the leaky veins, typically using a combination of sclerosant injection and the insertion of “embolization coils” into the veins.  This can be done through a small catheter inserted under local anesthesia in our office.  Patients can immediately return to normal activities.
